Cashing In: The (Over?) Abundance of New Poker Books

Since 2000 (a number somewhat arbitrarily chosen) there has been a plethora of poker books released. There are, in a nutshell, two different categories that all of these books can be categorized under. These categories being strategy and 'non-fiction'. Obviously strategy books are 'non-fiction', but I am describing books that either tell a story about a professional poker player, playing in a certain event, etc.., bu they do not offer any type of instructions, tips, or ideas to make one a better poker player (though, some could inadvertently do so). These are not the topic here though, because most people do not read those in order to become better poker players. They are generally read for entertainment purposes and any incorrect information will not effect ones poker ability (of course, either will correct information from these books). Strategy books, on the other hand, with incorrect information, can be detrimental to ones bankroll. The problem with this is that beginning poker players will not know what to look for and not only will waste money on the book, but lose money by following advice they didn't know was wrong. Below are some books that are recommended for beginning and intermediate poker players. Before the list is an explanation of why certain books were eliminated.

One type of strategy book, and I use 'strategy' loosely, are the 'inspirational' books posing as strategy books. Though the front covers (and sometimes the contents) will claim to make somebody a great poker player, they are usually filled with anecdotal evidence and anecdotal advice. Any mention of 'poker' could easily be replaced with any profession, sport, etc. Some things that are mentioned in these books are being patient, eating healthy, sleeping enough, not being rude, keeping a good attitude, not letting your emotions effect your decisions. Most people buying these books have finished Kindergarten and know that these are important things to do. I am not saying it isn't important, because it is, but it isn't specific to poker and by doing these things alone, one will not become a better poker player. If one wants to become a good mechanic, their diet and sleep schedule will have an effect on them, but knowing about cars will still make them better mechanics than someone who knows nothing about cars, but happens to have a good attitude and has a balanced diet. There will be some actual strategy in these books, but not enough to make it a good book and the incorrect information will more than cancel out the correct strategy in these books. They are purely filled with fluff, designed to make a profit for the author and publisher (with no concern for the consumer), and though sometimes with a few tidbits of good information, not enough to justify the amount of time spent reading the entire book. Well over half the poker books fit into this category and are not recommended.

The other type of book that was eliminated from the list is those with incorrect information. These are much harder to spot and there can really only be tips given to avoid them. One thing to remember is that just because someone is a poker celebrity or has won a major tournament, does not make them an expert or make them a good writer. The latter doesn't mean that they are bad players, but they might write about what would appeal to more people, hence selling more books, than what would make one a better poker player. Quick and anecdotal evidence is usually enjoyed by people more, but why read poker books to be entertained? Generally one is reading the poker book to become a better player.

Strategy and theory should be the prevalent discussion in the book. There should be tables, charts, simulations, studies, etc... to back up their concepts and ideas. Isolated and anecdotal evidence does not prove anything. The reasoning behind why they recommend an idea or theory should be well documented and be mathematically sound.

The books should also not give many absolutes. People are fairly dynamic and cannot be lumped into a specific category. A particular hand should not always be played the same or even played. Sometimes you will fold with a hand that you will sometimes raise with. This needs to be discussed in any beginners book and especially in a book for advanced players. It should also be mentioned that the concepts that work for no-limit don't always work for limit and the same goes with the different limits. If a poker book says it will teach you about every form and limit of poker, it is either very basic or false.

If a book is recommended below it fits all the criteria mentioned above, but just because a book is mentioned, does not mean that it is not a good book. I have not read every poker book and I am sure that I have not read some that are worth reading. But, all the books below will teach you how to think about the game and understand it better. This is really all one should hope for in a poker book and any book that guarantees or claims to make you a lot of money will not hold up to that lofty claim.

How Effective Are Poker Books?

Recently playing poker has become very popular all around the world. One of the main reasons for that is because there are many international poker tournaments and celebrity poker events shown on television. In case you want to learn how to play poker or simply make your poker skills better, then I suggest you to find some poker books. There are many wonderful poker books that can teach you everything about poker, even how to play as a professional.

If you have never played before and you want to take a few basic lessons then it would best for you if you purchase poker books for beginners. They will teach you the basics - the rules, the etiquette and the card variations. Even if you are really interested in poker and you would like to become an expert in it, if you are a novice, you should get poker books and get down to studying.

Once you get started, the game will enchant you and you would want to learn everything about the different card combinations and the best way to play them. Of course, poker as many other card games is a game of chance. However, there are many things you can do after the cards are dealt, so that you will have better chances at winning. Poker books will provide you with information what you should and shouldn't do when playing the game. Many books have explanations how you should play every possible card combination. Whether you will pass on or go "all in" depends on your cards and if you want to take the right decision, you should read some poker books.

There are also many poker books for advanced players who wish to learn the more difficult and tricky moves and techniques. Many of the books we are talking about are written by famous professional poker players. If you get a book from a pro and you learn it, then no matter on what table you sit in, you will not look like an amateur. Apart from the poker tips and moves, these books often include interesting stories from the poker tables.

Poker is a wonder game that everyone enjoys. Being such a popular game, there are many stories to be told about poker games. Some of the poker books contain only stories but they can be interesting for both beginners and professionals. Reading about how a complete beginner participated in a poker tournament and got a million dollar award winning first place will make you put more efforts into learning how to play poker. It will also give you hope that maybe one day if you practice long enough you could also win a big tournament.

Several Reviews Of Today's More Popular Poker Books

Finding a good poker book these days is not quite as easy as it

seems. There are more and more poker books popping up everyday. Especially books

on no limit holdem. I am going to be reviewing several books on poker. Here are

the covers I will briefly discuss: Harrington on Holdem Vol I, II and III, Mike

Caro's book of poker tells, and Sklansky 's Holdem Poker For Advanced Players.

I am reviewing these books on poker theory and tells because

they have been most helpful to me in becoming a profitable poker player.

Educating yourself on no limit holdem is not to difficult to do with all the

books out there. Just visit Amazon and type in no limit holdem and you will get

lots of selections. I recommend Amazon for this because they have a big

selection, you can buy the books used for a fair price and their are reviews of

the books right below the book. These reviews are written by people that have

purchased and read the book. I have found some of them helpful and found them to

be truthful because not all of them are good. So if you are looking for a book

on holdem I think Amazon is a good source.

Review of Dan Harrington 's Volume I-III: Dan Harrington

has been a successful No Limit Tournament player for a long time now. He has 3

books out that are actually best used as a set. Volume I talks about the

beginning stages of a poker tournament and hand selection. Its a great book for

beginners that want to learn the basic idea behind playing in tournaments.

Harrington goes over lots of different things in this book that every beginner

should know. The big one is hand selection and odds. He talks about how to play

tight aggressive which is his playing style. The next Book Volume II assumes

that you have read Volume I so it goes right in and builds on the principals

from the first book. Volume II talks about the end game, meaning towards the

middle or close to the money stage of the tournament where blinds are high and

people tend to get real tight. If you combine the knowledge of these two books

and have a little talent for the game of poker you will soon be successful in

playing no limit poker tournaments. I know after I read these two books I made

significant changes to my game and went from being a hit and miss tournament

player to consistently making the final table or at least close too. No matter

what you do you can not always win in my opinion however if you follow the Poker

strategies Harrington lays out in these two books you can get pretty close

consistently. Volume III is actually a test of your knowledge. What you will

find in all of Harrington's books which I really like is that he will explain a

theory and then give several scenarios where it can apply. This way not only do

you get an explanation of the tactic but also a couple of examples of where the

tactic fits in to your game. Well Vol. III is basically the test it is full of

scenarios for you to navigate through and after wards the book scores you. Now

depending on your score you can go back and review certain parts of the other

two books to improve that aspect of your game. This is almost like having a pro

go over your game and then show you the flaws you need to improve upon.

Sklansky 's Holdem Poker For Advanced Players: Let me

start of by saying that this book is not an easy read or at least it wasn't for

me, however Holdem Poker For Advanced Players has lots of gems in it and is well

worth reading. I have actually read the book 3 times now and I pick up something

I missed every time. This book is definitely not for total beginners but if you

have logged some time at the poker table you will find it very useful. I have

found this book to be helpful in playing cash games rather then tournament style

poker. Most of the theories in the book are more geared towards cash play in my

opinion. The book splits different tactics in to different types of games. It

talks about average games, tough games and loose games for example and then

gives you advice on the hands you should be playing according to the game you

are sitting in. This book is definitely worth reading over an over if you play

in cash games. You will find that if you use tournament tactics in cash games

you are not going to be as successful.

Mike Caro 's Book of Poker Tells: Mike Caro's book

of poker tells is a great read for any poker player that is interested in

reading their opponents. This book is full of poker tells that you will see at

the poker table and how to interpret them. Their are different types of tells.

You have tells that suggest a strong hand and tells that suggest a weak hand.

This book by the mad genius of poker is an eye opener to anyone that is trying

to figure out what their opponent is doing. This is the aspect of poker that

deals with playing the player not the cards. I say this because if I can read a

player properly the cards he are not as important. For example lets say you

notice that a player is weak and is wanting to lay the hand down. Now with this

information you make a bet and he folds the winning hand. If you could do that

would that not put big time bucks in your pocket? Or lets say you have a tough

call to make and you pick up something on the player that lets you know he has

you beat and you fold therefore saving you money. This is what Mike Caro's

Book of Poker Tells tries to teach you. I can honestly say that at least on one

occasion the only reason I made the final table was because I read this book. I

made 3 tough reads that got me in the money. This is not the only time that

tells that are talked about in this book have made it possible for me to get out

of a hand or to make the right call. If you are serious about playing live poker

I highly recommend this book on poker tells.

I hope these poker book reviews have been helpful in giving some

insight in to the books mentioned above.

Top 5 Best Poker Books

Poker is one of most popular past-times in many parts of the world, and to help participants learn the basic of the game (for beginners) or to help the participants 'up' their game (for those who are through with the basics), various poker books have been written. And the outreach of these books has been quite successful, with many people who are getting into poker nowadays confessing that they were introduced to poker through books.

So popular are these poker books, in fact, that a number of sites entirely dedicated to reviewing them have been coming up in the recent past.

There seems to be concurrence among the reviewers in these sites devoted to reviewing poker books that the best book on poker written in modern times is probably 'Harrington on Hold 'Em' by Dan Harrington and Bill Robertie, which comes in two volumes, namely 'Harrington on Hold 'Em' Volume 1 and 2. Dan Harrington, the author of these books himself is a former WSOP main event champion and a widely recognized authority on poker, and he is assisted in authoring the books by Bill Robertie (who is a former backgammon champion).

Barry Greenstein's Ace on the River is another great book on poker, and there are some reviewers of poker books who actually place it above Harrington's on Hold 'Em. Of course, the critics of Barry Greenstein's Ace on the River point out that while it is an incontestably great poker book, its is only targeted at advanced players of the game, and a poker beginner (who is also the person most likely to be looking into poker books anyway) might have a difficult time trying to make sense of the information presented in it. Still, Barry Greenstein's Ace on the River is considered by many as the ultimate guide to professional poker.

Then there is Michael Konik's aptly named 'Telling Lies and Getting Paid' - which many people, especially pros, looking for deeper meaning in their poker find inspiring through its numerous poker stories, which also give the possibility of enhancing one's strategy, without getting too technical. While not a step by step instructional on poker, 'Telling Lies and Getting Paid' is a book anyone who knows what poker is all about will find thoroughly entertaining.

Anthony Holden's 'Bid Deal' is yet another book which warrants a place among the top five best poker books of all times. Originally published in 1990, 'Big Deal' is actually Anthony Holden's personal memoir on life as a professional poker player, Anthony himself having been one of the topmost poker players of the 1990s. Again, while 'Big Deal' is definitely not a step by step introduction to poker, it is a book which an experienced poker player can find deeper meaning (as well as entertainment) in, and also a book which a poker beginner can find the next direction to take their game to.

Besides these top 5 best poker books, other books on the subject that are also worth of special mention include Lou Krieger's 'Holdem Excellence,' Matthew Hilger's 'Internet Texas Holdem' (for online poker buffs) and Doyle Brunson's 'Super System 2.'

Five Poker Tournament Books You Must Own

I've read and studied too many poker books to count. To save you time and money let me review for you the five best poker books on the market today, in my opinion.

Full Disclosure: I did not list my book since the article would lose credibility and I strongly urge you to consider these outstanding tournament poker books.

1. "Every Hand Revealed" by Gus Hansen

This is my favorite new book on tournament poker. Gus Hansen is one of the top poker pros having won millions of dollars.

In this book Gus takes you through each hand he plays in the 2007 Aussie Millions Event where he won $1.2 million. Not bad for a few days of work. You will learn how and when to be aggressive and the importance of figuring the odds when faced with a player who moves all-in against you. Also, Gus stresses the importance of the antes and how he is willing to re-raise a raiser pre-flop if he thinks he can get his opponent to fold.

2. "Making the Final Table" by Erick Lindgren

Erick Lindgren is another Poker Pro who has made millions of dollars at tournament poker. He just won his first bracelet at the 2008 World Series of Poker.

Erick outlines his strategies on winning no limit events. He will prove to you that the objective on a no limit tournament is not to survive but to accumulate chips. No one has ever folding their way to victory, and if you follow Erick's advice you will won't be sitting back waiting for pocket Aces ever again.

3. "The Book of Bluffs: How to Bluff and Win at Poker" by Matt Lessinger.

You need to know when and how to bluff to be a winning poker player. Matt has written a great book that will not only help your no limit tournament poker game but your poker game overall. I'm not bluffing.

4. "Harrington on Hold 'em Expert Strategy for No Limit Tournaments-Vol I-III," by Dan Harrington

Dan Harrington is a solid tournament poker player and when he introduced his approach to the game back in 2004 it was breakthrough. He introduced players to new moves like the Continuation Bet, and a concept called "M."

While his approach to poker is well-known today, it is something you should fully understand since so many players follow his teachings.

5. "The Full Tilt Poker Strategy Guide: Tournament Edition" by many poker pros

If you want to get a range of thinking on how to approach all tournament poker games, including no limit tournaments, this is a solid book. Each chapter is written by a different poker pro which makes for interesting reading.

Mitchell Cogert is the author of "Tournament Poker: 101 Winning Moves." After reviewing over 20 years worth of poker materials with heads-up battles against poker pros, he has identified the top 101 expert plays used by the pros. His other poker book "Play Razz Poker to Win" was selected by PokerStars IntelliPoker to be used on their site. For more information go to http://www.apokerexpert.com

Essential Poker Books For You and Me

Improving and tweaking your poker game is a never ending process and using various resources to do so is highly recommended. No matter if you're a rookie or an experienced player a good poker book can and most definitely will improve your skills. Here's a summary of three excellent poker books that we recommend any and all to give a read.

SIT 'N GO STRATEGY Book Title: Sit 'n Go Strategy Author: Collin Moshman Publisher: Two plus Two publishing Pages: 274

Looking for some Sit 'n Go strategy? This book is the Nuts and a major contribution to poker as there has been little literature on Sit 'n Go tournament strategy. "Sit 'n Go Strategy - Expert advice for beating one-table poker tournaments" is logically divided into four chapters; Low blind play, Mid blind play, High blind play and Career play.

Rather than just telling you how to play, it gives you the opportunity to make a decision about what you would most likely do in a given situation, and then the author explains what the correct decision is. The organizational structure of the book is also excellent and makes it very easy to quickly find a situation that you might want to review after an on-line Sit 'n Go session. We highly recommend this book for intermediate to advanced players as it takes general knowledge and applies it to 1 table Sit 'n Go tournaments.

Collin Moshman received an honors degree in theoretical math from the California Institute of Technology in 2003. He is considered to be one of the best 1 table sit 'n go tournament players using his specific math based approach.

THE THEORY OF POKER Book Title: The Theory of Poker Author: David Sklansky Publisher: Two plus Two publishing Pages: 276

Sklansky's The Theory of Poker has generally been regarded as a classic since its initial release and a must have on learning the fundamentals of poker. It applies a very mathematical and theoretical approach to the game for players who are interest in taking their poker game to the next level. Despite the fact that poker has changed tremendously over the 26 years this poker book was written, The Theory of Poker remains as valuable today as it was back in the Eighties. It's definitely not the easiest read for the uninformed but if you're looking to become a good poker player, it's a must have.

David Sklansky is a professional poker player and considered a top authority on gambling in general. He has written numerous books on poker, blackjack and gambling. Sklansky has won 3 WSOP bracelets (1982/1983) and won the "poker by the book" invitational event (2004). His 1976 book "Hold'em Poker" was the first widely available on the subject.

CARO'S BOOK OF POKER TELLS Book Title: Book of Poker Tells Author: Mike Caro Publisher: Cardoza publishing Pages: 320

This sure is one of greatest books ever written on poker and a must read for every serious beginning and live poker player. It covers around 50 different tells of various types divided into simple categories in which Mike Caro teaches you how to generate profit from reading your opponents. Caro also lists the reliability of tells based upon how good your opponents are. You should know that skill and an understanding of poker theory and game situations are more important than spotting tells but knowing all about these tells could give you the edge you need over your opponents.

In 1978 Mike "Mad Genius" Caro already contributed 50 statistical tables to Doyle Brunson's Super System and wrote that book's chapter on draw poker. He is a professional poker player and the founder of the Mike Caro University of Poker, Gambling and Life Strategy which is considered to be the world's first permanent poker school. Caro is the author of a number of books about poker including; The Body Language of Poker, Professional Hold'em Play by Play and Poker for Women.

Poker Strategy Books

Introduction

In your frenzy to become a winning poker player, you will often sit your self at a table and lose most of, if not all of your deposit within ten minutes. With the advent of online poker rooms, it is easy for the novice player to be taken for a harsh reality check by the sharks at the table. You will leave the table disheartened and wonder why you have lost all of your money so easily.

This is where reading a good poker strategy book can help you. Players need to learn the basics of poker before they can even contemplate making it in the world of online poker playing. There are so many poker strategy books out that it can be challenging to know which ones will improve your game the most.

High quality poker strategy books and training can cost you around $300, or you could pay hundreds of dollars for a poker lesson from a professional poker player.

The problem with a great deal of poker strategy books out there is that they are written by world class players who, although they clearly have a fantastic grasp of poker strategy, often struggle to bridge the gap between the target audience (recreational and semi professional players) and the world elite which they occupy.

Even if you've read all the poker strategy books you could get your hands on, your knowledge is still strictly theoretical, but this is still a major advantage over the players who have made their first mistake like I mentioned above.

Which is the novice sitting at the table not really knowing anything about how to play good poker and losing all their money. Poker is all about gaining an edge, poker strategy books will give you that edge.

Reading

When your hand goes sour and you find yourself riding that streak of bad luck, reading through a good poker book could be just what you need to get on the road to rediscovering fundamentals or pointing out probable vulnerabilities in your game. This includes concepts such as hand selection, position, proper image projection, and reading hands.

Online

During the last decade, the game's growth has been fuelled in part by the easy availability of online playing sites where participants can play cash games and tournaments 24 hours a day, every day. Online Poker is a game that has evolved over time. The majority of real money players LOSE more than they win at online poker. If you are one of those people, then reading poker books is your best weapon at tackling the deficit you have in the fine intricacies of poker. Reading books about poker strategy is a must if you wish to be successful in the online world.

Poker

Poker is a game of many skills and to become an expert poker player you need to master them all. Poker combines mathematical, tactical and psychological elements and is therefore a very versatile game with many different aspects. Poker strategy for Texas Hold 'Em can be complicated and intricate, so the best thing you can do is learn what are some of the most common mistakes made by novices to the game.

Poker books can improve your poker skills faster than any other form of poker education. Books can bump you up the learning curve faster than playing 200,000 hands.

Poker rewards two things above all else, and that is patience and aggression. Poker, then, is a game of luck only in the short term, and over the long term a complex game of strategy and skill.

Winning

Once upon a time, the only way to learn how to play winning poker was to lose your money to more seasoned players until you (hopefully) figured out how they were beating you so badly. If you are serious about winning, and most of us are, then a good book on poker strategy is a prized possession. After all, a winning poker player must possess a substantial amount of talent, heart, instinct, and awareness too. Poker books are one of the best tools for helping you develop a winning Texas Hold'em strategy.

Conclusion

Rather than focusing on the massive pots and short term gains, to win consistently at online poker you need the depth of knowledge that a book can provide, things like on how the pro's handle the bad beats and maintain discipline and not go on tilt. Successful poker players are consistent the reason for this, is that they play with a poker strategy. Treat online poker playing as a business you need the know how to drive the business forward.

There are many reference's to many styles of poker books out there, where some of the most successful pro's out there give there tips on how to beat the game. Giving advanced calculations and systems for consistently winning which are explained in such a simple manner, it's easy to place the theory into practice.

Start to apply the strategies in these books, and you will notice a considerable increase on your return. You will have the confidence to pull the trigger knowing that they are bluffing. Or laying down a strong hand knowing you are beat. It's this fine line and decision making that will help you onto the road of success in online poker. We hope that our site helped you locate the winning poker strategy that suits your play.

Poker Tips Books - How To Find The Best Information To Improve Your Poker Skills

If you want poker tips books, there are certainly many available today. Whether you search offline for physical hardcover books, or the ever growing in popular e-books via the net, there are certainly more than enough books to teach you how to play effective poker today.

Finding them really isn't very hard. However, before you go out and read them, here are some very important tips to help you improve at poker as quickly as possible.

First of all, keep in mind that poker is becoming more popular all the time, and is one often fastest growing sports in the world. This is especially true online.

Nowadays, there are literally thousands of websites that allow you to play poker, both for free and in paid games. As the online poker industry is growing every day, the demand for poker tips is growing more and more popular and this is why there are so many poker tips available today. Whether you just want to play free poker for fun with online poker freerolls or bet thousands of dollars, you can do so online.

First of all, before you learn the ins and outs of the game of poker, keep in mind that no matter how many tips you get, the best way to improve your skills is by some simple practice. It's one thing to hear people talk about the skills needs for poker; it's quite another to actually do it. Therefore, once you've found the right poker tips books, make sure you get out there immediately and stat to apply what you're learned.

The best way to find the right tips for poker is to simply do your research, and type poker tips or some variation into one of the major search engines. There will be literally thousands of websites that come up giving you insight and advice as to how to improve your poker skills. The vast majority of poker players will never bother to read through this information, so if you do, you will certainly have a major advantage over your competition.

Also, often times the poker room you play in online will have a professional who is available to give you tips on how to improve your game. If the particular site you are on doesn't have this important feature, try to find a more popular site that does. Typically, the more populated a site is, the better the chance they will have a pro who hangs out there.

Also, you might want to read an online poker room rating before choosing which room to play in; very simply, not only is this important to find the best competition to play against, but also to make sure you find a secure site. Very simply, many poker sites nowadays are not very secure, and if you give them your personal information, you could be in serious trouble. Therefore, an online poker room rating can certainly help alleviate this problem.

In fact, some online poker sites have sent many poker players to the world tournaments in Las Vegas, so try to play there as much as possible. The best poker tip, by far, is to always play against people who are better than you, so that you are forced to improve your game. You typically tend to play to the level of your competition, so if you are forced to play against somebody better than you, more than likely, you will improve much quicker this way.

When looking for the best poker tips books, try to find out information such as which hands you should play at certain times, which ones to bet, how much to bet with a certain hand, etc. Also, you can learn tips on how to bluff and spot others who might be bluffing as well; obviously, in poker not showing your hand or tipping your cards is extremely important, so these tips are very important for you to become an effective poker player.

Therefore, do your research, find the best poker tips books to read, and get out there and get in the game and start improving your skills. The only way to improve is by practice, so as soon as you've read this tips, start implementing immediately.
