Poker - today's most popular card game - has a written history that is as rich as the prize money in winning a World Series tournament. As history evolved, variations of the poker game were introduced. The "Hold Me Darling" card game is now known for its modern name of Texas Hold'em - the most popular poker game. Other poker variations are No Limit/Pot Limit Poker, Fixed Limit Poker, Seven Card Stud Poker, Spread Limit Poker, Omaha Poker, Razz Poker and Pineapple Poker.
Strategies in playing the game were likewise developed and shared among players. Here is a list of some of the strategies being used by poker players.
Treat poker like a long-term investment. Playing a poker is easy to learn but like any other field, mastering the trade needs practice. Understand and have a thorough knowledge of the basic poker strategy. A poker player must know when to call, fold, raise or re-raise, employ pot odds and bet aggressively. With constant practice, a poker player will eventually develop his own advanced strategy. Play a simple poker game. When you know you got the best hands, bet aggressively. Bluffing is good but sometimes, it does not work. After mastering the basic strategy, a poker player has more control on the result of the game. Depending on the current condition of the game, the poker can then deviate from a simple strategy to a more advanced one.
Adapt your moves to the current game. There is no definite rule on how to win a poker game. Poker is a game played under changing strategies and conditions. Playing poker by the book will only reveal moves to the opponent. A poker player must be able to adapt his game to the cards on hand and the situation at play.
Evaluate your previous moves after every play. This will help you understand more what happened during the play, discover the wrong moves and develop a skill or step the next time you are on the same situation.
Know when to quit. It is advised that no one should play poker for more than 10 hours in a day. A poker player must know when to continue playing a losing game or quit while still ahead. When you feel that the decisions you are making are getting worse, quit. Do not gamble more money than you can afford to lose.
Winning a poker game is a product of different moves and strategies. Study, practice and learn from the professional poker players. It does not necessarily mean you should move and act like them. Developing your own unique sets of strategies in every game will give you advantage over your opponents who cannot predict what your next move is.
